Bumblebee refers to a “good guy” in the Transformers universe cast of characters. He is usually a yellow member of the Autobot group, and he transforms into a compact car. Bumblebee is also a mascot, always attempting to prove himself to the taller robots.
He especially desires to prove himself to Optimus Prime. He admires others to the extent that he takes risks for them, putting himself in danger.
Bumblebee is a wise-cracker at times, but he is an excellent spy and messenger, and his size allows him to infiltrate places where the taller Autobots cannot. He uses very little fuel, has keen eyesight, and even can work underwater. His transformation is into a VW Beetle. Later he would be reconstructed into a more mature and strong form, Goldbug.
Bumblebee is accepted as the smallest Autobot, but in the various media where Transformers appear, he is sometimes the same size as the other Autobot cars, and sometimes just a bit taller than a human. In the earlier Marvel comics, he was listed as being 15 feet tall.
In the original animated series of Transformers, as well as the comics, Bumblebee served as the young character so that younger audience members would have a character that they could identify with. He also befriended Sam Witwicky, who was the Autobots’ main human ally. His young character has inspired others with the same type of role, including Hot Shot and Cheetor.
In the Marvel Comics, Bumblebee was one of the first Autobots that went to explore Earth after they were awakened
there. He wanted to meet an Earth life form, and got his wish only after being injured by Decepticons and taken to a garage where he was repaired. Bumblebee set up the humans’ first meeting with Optimus Prime, and he remained a go-between for the humans and the Autobots.
Bumblebee later grew to wonder if he was really useful to the Autobots, and he left them, without explaining why. At the same time, the Decepticons wanted to use mind-control on him against the other Autobots. He hid in a used car lot, and was stolen by humans, whom he protected from an attack by Decepticons. Then Bumblebee was saved from them by the Autobots, and he was thus convinced of his worth to the faction.
Bumblebee was in the 2007 Transformers movie, returning as a friend to Sam Witwicky, the Autobots’ human ally. Sam’s glasses actually held the key to finding the AllSpark, and Bumblebee guarded him from the Decepticons, while posing as an old Chevy Camaro. Sam’s family bought the car, but later, when Bumblebee left to find the other Autobots, Sam believed he was being stolen, and he gave chase.
When Bumblebee transformed into a robot, this was reported by Sam to the police, and Bumblebee returned to Sam to protect them from Frenzy and Barricade, thus earning him Sam’s trust. Sam’s friend Mikaela chastised the clunker car that Bumblebee appeared to be, so he changed into a sharper-looking vehicle. Then he took them to meet the rest of the Autobots.
A secret government group known as Sector 7 arrested the two humans, and when the Autobots attempted a rescue, Bumblebee was captured. He was tested and tortured, but Sam negotiated for his release.
Bumblebee went on to survive the epic battle scene at the end of the film, but lost the use of his legs when he helped deflect missiles away from Starscream.
Following the battle, he was fully repaired, and he sought permission to stay with the humans. It was granted, and at the end of the film, Sam and Mikaela laid on his hood, watching the sunset.
