Optimus Prime is one of the main characters in the world of Transformers. He is one of the leaders of the heroic group, the Autobots.
His ship crashed on Earth and he was unconscious for many millions of years, when an earthquake triggered his ship’s repair system. He was repaired at that time, and adapted to transform into a vehicle common to Earth.
He and the Autobots fight against the evil Decepticon forces. Optimus Prime is always shown to be a compassionate and brave character who does everything he can to positively impact his world.
He is righteous and just, and protects all life, especially that on Earth.
Optimus Prime in his original form transformed into a cab-over truck. The cab can transform into the robot mode of Optimus Prime, and it has extraordinary strength and a laser rifle. In his chest is a mysterious talisman called the Autobot Matrix of Leadership or the Creation Matrix. This is carried by all the leaders of the Autobots and is passed down as the ages pass by.
The comic book depictions of Optimus Prime claim that his predecessor and previous Matrix bearer was Sentinel Prime, but in the cartoons, we don’t know where he inherited the talisman from. This change is shown when the truck’s trailer becomes the Combat Deck, with an Auto-Launcher robot, who has a variety of artillery and beam weapons. It is
also used as a communication device for the Autobots on the battlefield. In addition, the Combat Deck is capable of launching the third component of Optimus Prime, a mobile scout buggy named Roller. Optimus can survive damage to his other components, but they could not survive independent of Optimus.
In the animated Transformers series, Optimus Prime’s powers also included hydrofoils to help traverse water, holographic projections of maps and optic blasts that could be fired at short-range. He can also retract the unit of his right hand and have it replaced with a glowing ax.
As you cross the various Transformers universe continuities, Optimus Prime has had various interpretations. He is 
committed to leading by example, and he hates hypocrisy. The animated series portrayed Optimus as wise, up-front and a positive general on the battlefield. Marvel Comics suggested, however, that Optimus was plagued secretly by self-doubt, and a feeling that he did not wish to be a warrior. They even implied that the Decepticons’ conflict lasted longer due to Optimus Prime’s unwillingness to be more aggressive against them.
In the Transformers movie, Optimus Prime only came to Earth after a beacon was sent by Bumblebee to his comrades. When he re-entered the atmosphere, Prime landed outside of the areas inhabited by Tranquility. He scanned an Earth truck so that he could enable himself to transform into it. Prime also assumed his robot form in front of the humans Mikaela Banes and Sam Witwicky. Prime also explained to the stunned humans their intentions, the search for the All Spark, Megatron’s betrayal and the reason why Sam was so important a part of their search.
Sam was the one who actually killed Megatron in the movie, and destroyed the All Spark. Optimus knew there had
really been no other choice. Prime removed the All Spark fragment from the chest of Megatron and allowed the humans to dump the Decepticon bodies in the ocean.
Since the All Spark had been destroyed, the Autobots could not restore Cybertron, but they decided to remain on Earth. A message was sent to any other Autobots to come to Earth as well. Optimus Prime could only hope that the message was received.
