Barricade is a member of the Decepticon group of Transformers. He was first seen in 1990, and was then a member of a Decepticon patrol team on a race track. He could transform into a Formula One race car.

Barricade ran with one of Cybertron’s most vicious racing gangs, and that’s where he learned how to handle himself. As the head of Race Track Patrol, he shows his brutal edge consistently. His troops obey him, it seems, out of fear at what might happen to them if they screw up. He dresses down his subordinates if they don’t meet his standards. He has low morale in his Patrol, but he feels that his abusive style is used for the good of his troops.

Barricade was originally called “Runner”, but he saw quickly the obvious rewards if he joined the Decepticons, and he was renamed “Barricade” after he showed an ability to run the blockade of enemies.

Another Barricade Transformer was made in the Energon series, and he was the leader of the group that transformed into Bruticus Maximus, who was a missile truck.

In the 2007 Transformers movie, Barricade appears as a Decepticon that can transform into a police car, so he looks a bit like the First Generation Autobot Prowl. He seems to be a rival of Bumblebee, and he is roughly the same height. Barricade helps the Decepticons by being a hunter and a scout. His vehicle mode makes it easy to blend in with the humans. He impersonates a bad cop when he gets a chance to interview the human Sam Witwicky.

Barricade can force his arms to become longer, with spinning spikes in his hands, that are called blade wheels. When he transforms into a police car, he can also make it appear as though he has a human driver.

In early, leaked script versions of the Transformers movie, Barricade was called “Brawl”, and some of the concept art still bears that name. They actually changed his name and Brawl would become another Decepticon.

In the Official Transformers video game guide, Barricade is listed at sixteen feet in height, and weighing 2.2 tons. In a typical Transformers style, other guides have him listed as 19 feet tall and 25 feet tall, respectively.

In The Legends two-pack with Barricade and Cliffjumper, it says that these two are old rivals, and that Cliffjumper can taunt Barricade into making stupid mistakes.

Barricade is one of only a few non-military Decepticons, along with Sideways, Frenzy, Scorponok and the Constructicons. He and his partner Frenzy, along with Sideways, appear to be the few Decepticons capable of blending into an environment that is civilian.

The Energon Transformers books by Dreamweave were canceled before the character Barricade was able to appear in them. The Energon guide book that was being developed at the time showed pencil art that included all the conceptual art that would be woven into the character “Barricade”.

In the Transformers Energon toy line, Barricade was usually sold by himself, except in Japan. He would later be repackaged for the Universe line of Transformers toys, and all abilities to combine with other team members was deleted, since those members were not part of the Universe toy line.
