Devastator refers to several characters in the universe of the Transformers. He is the larger robot that all the Constructicons can merge into. His main form is simple brutality, and his goal is to destroy everything that might get in the way.

Although it seems ironic that Constructicons, being intelligent, can sacrifice their ability to think when they enter his form, actually, singleness of purpose is a limitation often found in Transformers characters.

Devastator’s actions and thoughts are limited, and reflective of what little his six parts may be able to agree upon. He seems to rely mainly on instinct, and he often lashes out without considering what the consequences might be. He is a bit slow, however, which makes him an easy target to trip.

From the information gathered in the Transformers comic books by Marvel UK, we learned that Devastator is roughly one hundred feet tall. In the animated series, however, he was portrayed as being forty-eight feet tall. The Constructicons’ origins are not very complicated, according to Marvel Comics. Shockwave, a Commander of the Decepticons, arranged for their construction, and they were given life by the powerful Creation Matrix.

The Constructicons were then put to work, to make a radio transmission type dish that Soundwave would use to beam his message across the skies to Cybertron. The Autobots tried to stop the transmission, but this is when we learned that Constructicons had a hidden power, when they all transformed into Devastator, and he fought the Autobots off and allowed that message to get through successfully.

In the Marvel Comics, the Autobots tried to create their own construction to battle Devastator, but it only included three components, as compared to Devastator’s six.

In the animated series, Omega Supreme tells us that the lovely Crystal City was created by the Constructicons many years before, which he himself guarded. He was hurt when the Constructicons were reprogrammed and turned into Decepticons. In their first mission under Megatron, the Constructicons combined to lure away Omega from Crystal City, and then they destroyed it.

In the 2007 Transformers movie, Devastator is one character that can transform into an M1 Abrams tank. This character was originally to be called Brawl, and even in the merchandising, the Brawl name is used. But in the final cut of the movie, he identifies himself as Devastator, in a sub-title.

To further add to the confusion, there is a different character named Devastator in the second movie. The writers of the movie have even acknowledged that it was indeed an error. The director preferred the name Devastator, because it sounds “more dangerous”.

In Revenge of the Fallen, it was confirmed that some new Decepticons will form the character Devastator in the 2009 film, and that his upper body strength would resemble that of a gorilla. He can also widen his mouth and suck objects in just as a wood chipper might. This movie reveals that any of eight Constructicon members can form Devastator. In another oddity, he has green eyes, whereas most Decepticons have red eyes. His intelligence is lower than the generic Decepticons, since all his component parts have to agree on his next action.
