Due to past Transformer games on PS3 being an absolute disappointment in the past, it should have been no surprise that most gamers weren’t expecting too much of War for Cybertron. Since there was talk of the game back in the beginning of the year, Matt Tieger, High Moon’s Game Director seemed to be saying exactly what gamers and Transformer fans wanted to hear but would the game really deliver?
Opposite of past Transformer games on PS3, War of Cybertron is not at all based on the movies. What High Moon did was create an exceptional game and storyline first and then transformed (small play on words) it into a Transformer game. This is what makes the game so special. Combine that with some remarkable hands-off demos and a great
trailer and you have one outstanding creation.
Many hearts were broken over past Transformer games on PS3 so most fans approached War for Cybertron quite skeptical with an arms crossed and a nose in the air kind of welcoming but as soon as you start playing, all that bitterness seems to melt away.
In the Game
The competitive multiplayer mode is based on third person shooting ability accompanied with driven ranking system and weapon and skill unlocks. There are four classes being:
• Recon Transformers – These are the fastest and smallest coupes and sports cars on the lot. They favor using scoped,
long distance weapons because their construction is a bit more fragile.
• The Scientists – These are the beloved jets you’ve come to adore in Transformer games on PS3 including Jetfire and Starscream. They serve as medics and support.
• Trucks – Next are the bulky trucks including Optimus Prime and Soundwave. Yes, you read that right, Soundwave turns into a truck in this game!
• Soldiers – These include Megatron and other bruisers who transform into nearly unstoppable tanks.
Every class features chassis of Autobots and Decepticons from previous Transformer games on PS3 but with customizable color schemes. As you play, you can unlock additional chassis to choose from that you can use in multiplayer mode.
Transformations are handled in War for Cybertron by simply clicking the left analog stick with every form having its own weaknesses and advantages. Vehicle forms are highly mobile and faster than ever before and scientists have the ability to heal or prevent opposing characters from transforming. Therefore sticking close to Jetfire and Starscream in battle is recommended.
Matches support an impressive 10 players online which is really fast and challenging since everyone is incredibly mobile. War for Cybertron is definitely the best of the Transformer games on PS3 thus far, offering a truly new and exciting Transformer world to explore.
