An Informative Guide to Transformer Games on PSP
War for Cybertron has succeeded where other Transformer games on PSP failed. The game is set long before the original cartoon series and it opens by telling the story about the final days for the Decepticons and Autobots due to the Civil War that happened on Cybertron.
It definitely fills in a few gaps that many fans will appreciate such as how Optimus came to hold the Prime position and Starscream’s defection from all of the Autobots.
Although the story telling was considered anything but good in previous Transformer games on PSP, High Moon does a fantastic job on War for Cybertron. They offer a really good modernization of original characters while maintaining important features that matter to the fans. There’s also a text crawl before every level that helps filling in any information you may have missed.
Even when minor changes were made, High Moon pays attention to detail to keep game play interesting. While some fans may feel a bit of frustration over Soundwave transforming into a Cybertronian truck you will find a point a few hours into the Autobot story that will provide compensation to make up for this.
A new feature that wasn’t in past Transformer games for PSP is the constantly moving gears and pistons while the
Transformer is in humanoid form. Also, High Moon developed War for Cybertron to require just as much up close melee combat as third-person shooting.
Encounters and levels require the skill to Transform properly and at the right time to be successful and being a strong player in each form is absolutely necessary. For gamers who will jump right into co-op campaign mode, you will find something that is shocking and refreshing.
All of the same combat scenarios explored in the single player campaign are not only present online but also in fast forward. Matches are capped at a 10-player maximum but you will find that even this many players offers a play that is a bit too frantic. Conquest mode seems to be a favorite, allowing the momentum between Decepticons and
Autobots to change abruptly to keep you on the edge of your seat, a feature that past Transformer games on PSP did not share.
Is it Perfect?
Not quite but its such an improvement that it may leave you feeling bad for any High Moon bad-mouthing you may have engaged in over previous Transformer games on PSP. Some of the battles seem overly long but the fact that you can customize chassis actually makes up for this. Be sure to check out the Horde-alike Escalation mode as well as the inventive online multiplayer components. War for Cybertron has become a surprisingly popular game choice to play online this year over many other options.
